Visiting a cannabis dispensary for the first time can feel unfamiliar, even if you already know what you want. This first-time dispensary guide walks you through every step of a visit to a licensed New York dispensary, from what to bring and how to check that a store is legal to how ordering ahead works and what the law says after you leave. It is written by the team at Raven’s Joint, a licensed adult-use dispensary in Clay, NY, but the steps apply to any licensed store in New York.
Step 1: Bring a Valid Photo ID That Shows You Are 21 or Older
Adult-use cannabis in New York is for people 21 and over, and every licensed dispensary checks ID before a sale. Bring a valid, unexpired, government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, a state ID card or a passport. Expired IDs, photos of an ID on your phone and IDs that do not show your date of birth are commonly refused, so carry the physical card. You will show your ID when you walk in and again at the counter, including when you pick up an order you placed online.
Step 2: Make Sure the Dispensary Is Licensed
Only businesses licensed by the New York Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) may sell cannabis in the state. Unlicensed smoke shops and “gifting” storefronts are not legal sellers, and their products have not gone through state testing. Licensed dispensaries post OCM’s Dispensary Verification Tool, a placard with a QR code, in their window. Scan it with your phone and it confirms the store is on the state’s list. You can also check the official OCM dispensary list before you go. Raven’s Joint is licensed under OCM license OCM-CAURD-24-000081.
Step 3: Browse the Menu Before You Go
Most licensed dispensaries publish a live menu online, so you can see what is in stock and the current price before you leave home. At Raven’s Joint you can browse the live menu by category or by brand. If you are new to the product types, here is what each category means:
- Flower: the dried bud of the cannabis plant, sold by weight, often in 3.5 g (an eighth), 7 g and larger sizes. See our cannabis flower selection.
- Pre-rolls: flower that is already rolled, sold as singles or multi-packs. Infused pre-rolls also contain concentrate. See pre-rolls.
- Vapes: 510-thread cartridges that need a battery, or all-in-one devices with a built-in battery. See vapes and carts.
- Edibles: gummies, chocolates and similar products. New York’s product rules cap edibles at 10 mg of THC per serving and 100 mg per package. See edibles.
- Concentrates: products such as live resin, rosin and hash. See concentrates.
- Tinctures and topicals: liquid drops and products applied to the skin. See tinctures and topicals.
- Accessories: batteries, papers and other supplies. See accessories.

It also helps to check the current deals and specials so you know about any offers before you get to the counter.
Step 4: Decide Whether to Order Ahead for Pickup
You do not need to order online, but it can make your first visit faster. When you order ahead from our online menu, you choose your products, check out and then come to the store to pick up. Bring the same valid ID, because the store must verify your age before handing over any cannabis. Ordering ahead is also a low-pressure way to take your time comparing products, reading descriptions and checking prices without a line behind you.
Step 5: What Happens When You Arrive
When you walk into a licensed dispensary, a staff member checks your ID at the door or at a check-in desk. Inside, you can browse displays and talk with a budtender, the staff member who helps customers find products. A good budtender will explain the difference between product formats, show you where to find the THC content and serving size on a label, and answer questions about price and package size.
Budtenders are not doctors, and licensed dispensaries in New York cannot make health claims about cannabis. If you have questions about cannabis and your health or any medication you take, talk to a medical professional before you buy.
Step 6: Read the Label
Every licensed product sold in New York carries a state-compliant label. Look for the universal symbol that marks cannabis products, the total THC and CBD content, the serving size and number of servings for edibles, the batch or lot number and a way to see the lab results. These details make it easy to compare one product with another and to understand exactly what you are buying. If anything on a label is unclear, ask a budtender to walk you through it.
Step 7: Know New York’s Limits and Rules After You Buy
According to the Office of Cannabis Management, adults 21 and over may possess up to 3 ounces of cannabis and 24 grams of concentrated cannabis. A few other rules matter once you leave the store:
- Do not use cannabis in a vehicle. It is illegal for the driver or any passenger to smoke cannabis in a car, moving or parked, and open containers of cannabis in a vehicle are not allowed.
- Never drive impaired. Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal in New York.
- Know where consumption is allowed. Adults may consume in a private home and in most places where tobacco smoking is allowed, but not in state parks, on federal property, or where a business, hotel or landlord prohibits it.
- Keep it in New York. Taking cannabis across state lines is illegal, even into another state where cannabis is legal.
- Store it safely. Keep cannabis locked up and out of reach of children and pets. If someone consumes cannabis by accident, call New York Poison Control at (800) 222-1222, or 911 in an emergency.
